In March 1952, JD Hall went to work for Sleep Easy Mattress Co. in California.
Within 2 years he purchased the stock of that store and opened on his own in El Monte, a suburb of Los Angeles. In 1961 JD closed his stores and moved his family
back to Arkansas with a semi-trailer of mattress "units".
Renting the old Safeway building from Hale Dry Goods at the corner of Broad and College, he hung a curtain in the back and
once again began making his mattresses. He would sell them out the front of the store and some say he was the "Original Salesman",
a born natural! He began by advertising 2 twin sets for $59.95 and he sold ALOT!
Rod Hall, JDs son and now President of Sleep Star Lite, started helping his
father in the business at the tender age of ten. He and his sister Beverly,
began by buttoning mattresses. Rod earned 10 cents for each mattress completed on his own and for every one
he had a helping hand with, he earned a nickle! By the time Rod was 12, he was making deliveries. After completing
2 years at Arkansas State
University in 1971, Rod began working full time for Sleep Star Lite
and continues the family business today. Continuing the family tradition, customers
are still offered those great low prices with that cheerful friendly attitude.
